About Thornton Park Retirement Village Staff

Sue Toi

CAREGIVER / HEALTH & SAFETY OFFICE

I grew up in Opotiki with 10 siblings on a farm. I joined the NZ Army in 1972, my fathers orders, so I wouldn't marry my relatives.

I married a soldier in 1975 and followed him with his career pathway, two children together and blessed with 6 grandchildren.

Prior to his discharge I asked him to bring me home to Opotiki, to my family. In Labour weekend of 1989, the opportunity to return home finally came. I came to follow up possible employment at Thornton park Village, to see how I may be able to assist, to fit in, to gauge that feeling of belonging.

Thornton Park Village was quite unique back then, with an existing motel set up, turned into a care facility. It was a new addition to a small rural community that was very clean in appearance and with a warm welcoming ambience about it.

Over the past 32 years, I continue to remain loyal and committed to the service and care of our residents. The growth of Thornton Park Village has always been steady, but progressive in so many aspects that will remain an admirable feature and testimony to my continued service driven by personal passion to look after our residents and community at large.
